Veterans Day event set in Wilsonville at memorial

by: SPOKESMAN FILE PHOTO - The Korean War Memorial is located near the Wilsonville Visitors Information Center, 29600 SW Park Place, and honors Oregon soldiers and the Korean people from the Korean War.To honor all veterans, but especially those who have served or are still serving in Korea, there will be a special ceremony Nov. 11 at the Oregon Korean War Memorial in Wilsonville on Veterans Day.

For Chuck Lusardi, president of the Korean War Veterans of America, Oregon Trail Chapter, the day is a time to pay tribute to all of those who have served in the armed forces.

Originally, the KWVA was planning a simple 30-minute observance on Nov. 11, but the event has now grown in size and significance.

South Korean Consul General Young Wan Song, an ambassador for peace, will be attending and presenting certificates and medals to about 30 Korean War veterans. The recognition is to say thank you from the Korean government for their participation in the Korean War, according to Lusardi.

Also, Brig. Gen. Eric Bush will be in attendance, along with many veterans and their families.

On top of that, the Korean government has paid to have several thousand copies of “Korea Reborn,” a commemorative book of the Korean War to distribute to anyone who has served in Korea.

“(It’s a book) about what Korea is today because of what happened 60 years ago,” Lusardi said.

To Lusardi, who served in the Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952, honoring veterans is important.

“We will always have veterans because veterans are being made every day. We will always have conflict,” he said. “We take for granted the wonderful things we have always been surrounded with. ... It is so unique to have an environment as this country has had for all these generations. We need to really recognize that what we have is because some have fought and many have died for it.”

When anyone thanks Lusardi for his service, he said he feels a connection right away.

“It doesn’t take much, just a few words,” he said.

The Veterans Day event is Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Oregon Korean War Memorial and the Wilsonville Visitors Information Center, 29600 SW Park Place, Wilsonville. Albertsons will be catering coffee and pastries for the event. Members of the Wilsonville City Council will attend and a local Boy Scout troop may be helping with setup and take-down.
