Driver leaves roadway, strikes tree, car catches fire

Oregon State Troopers are investigating the crash.Oregon State Police are investigating Friday's single vehicle fatal traffic crash off the northbound shoulder of Interstate 5 about three miles south of Wilsonville.

All three lanes of northbound Interstate 5 are open but traffic delays remained for several hours afterward.

According to OSP, the crash was reported at approximately 11:55 a.m. today after a passenger car with one occupant was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 281 in the far right lane. For an unknown reason, the car traveled off the right shoulder, through grass for about 200 feet and then collided head-on into a tree. The car's interior caught fire and was eventually extinguished by firefighters from Aurora Rural Fire Protection District.

UPDATE: The male driver of the car was deceased at the scene. It took authorities several hours, but he has been identified, police said. His name is being withheld, pending next of kin notification.

OSP troopers and collision reconstructionists from the Portland Area Command office are investigating. ODOT is on scene assisting with traffic control.
