Nonprofit MAP looking for board members, school reps

Music and Arts Partners — better known as MAP — will host a meeting for parents who are interested in learning more about the organization and its efforts to fill the funding gap for arts and music programs in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District.

The independent, volunteer-driven nonprofit has returned approximately $800,000 to music and arts programs throughout the district since its founding in 1995. The money has funded teacher grants, purchased musical instruments, furnished staging equipment and costumes for drama and art, sponsored large performance-based events like the middle school musical and brought professional artists-in-residence to work with teachers and students.

Each year, MAP also awards college scholarships to graduating seniors. This spring, six winners have been chosen. Four seniors from the district will receive MAP scholarships. Two seniors from West Linn High School will receive the Morris Family Band and Drama scholarships. Winners will be announced at West Linn and Wilsonville high school’s senior award nights.

MAP currently is recruiting new members for leadership positions on the group’s board of directors as well as parents to represent each of the district’s schools. Interested families are invited to attend the meeting, scheduled from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 14 at the district’s administrative building, 22210 SW Stafford Road. Attendees will hear a short presentation about the organization’s work, learn about the quarterly meeting schedule and have a chance to ask questions.

MAP raises funds via membership donations and through the Dollar for the Arts program each spring, when the district’s schoolchildren each are encouraged to donate $1 to the arts. The nonprofit also is a partner in the Oregon Cultural Trust. More information about MAP, including an online membership and donation form, can be found online at Contributions are tax-deductible.
