Behind the colorful dresses and painted-on moustaches, however, the diminutive dancers were on a serious mission, to perform traditional folk dances as part of their school’s Day of the Children SPOKESMAN PHOTOS: JOSH KULLA - The boys performing with the Folklorico group, including David Hernandez, wore traditional costumes complete with moustaches for the performance.

The day was all about celebrating children, as Boones Ferry’s Folklorico dance group shared their talents for their fellow Wilsonville students. The dancers performed two songs, “El Baile de los Machetes” and “El Jarabe Tapatio” — better known as the Mexican hat dance song. by: SPOKESMAN PHOTOS: JOSH KULLA - Boeckman Creek's world language teacher, Cynthia Munoz, performed a traditional Mexican folk dance as part of the schools Day of the Children celebration April 30.

“On April 30, Latin America lights up with joy to celebrate childhood,” the group’s teacher leader, Myrna Salinas, said.

“It’s kind of like Mother’s Day, or Father’s Day,” Boeckman Creek teacher Jane McGraw told the children assembled in the Boeckman gym for the performance. “But it’s about children. We are so excited, because today it’s about you.”
